Persia, Bridge of Light
. . . the millenniums of old Iranian history and culture, have always been associated with toleration
and other humanitarian features in both its ups and downs. All invading cultures, shortly after their
initial sweeping waves, have been attracted to and dissolved in the Iranian culture's message of
friendship and brotherhood. Across all fields of human endeavors, the Iranian intellectual thought has
ever believed in the happiness of mankind, its fraternity, and the universal nature of all men. The
poem by the internationally known Iranian poet, the great Sa'di, truly reflects this belief:
The sons of Adam are members of the same body
The ones who are the same mould in their creation
The Iranian ancient religions of Mithraism, Mazdayasnism, Manichaeism, and Masdakism had all preached but
honesty, peace and good deeds among people. In the Post-Islamic Iran too, the deepest and gentlest spiritual
unity was established amongst all religions. In this period, concepts such as the totality of the Truth's
manifestation in the corporeal world were put forth by the Muslim ascetics and mystics in this land; just as
Hafiz says:
There is no difference between the Khanghah* and Kharabat** loves
Wherever it may be, the light of the beloved's countenance exists
In any different culture the Truth speaks in the language peculiar to that specific culture. In Iran, the most
important spiritual allegory is probably Light and experiences related to it; a phenomenon which is a basic
element in the ascetic intellectual system of all eastern mystic schools. According to Zoroastrian traditions,
the god of unending time, Zarvan is asleep in a halo of light, and his offspring, Ahura Mazda, is represented
as a deity of light. In the glorious Koran, the Almighty God calls Himself the Light of the heavens and the earth.
All existence is the emission of the Truth or the Light of the immortal world. The Iranian poet, Shabestari, says:
Consider the world as the glow of the Truth's light
The intensity of the glow is so great that has hidden Truth in it
Iran, therefore, might be known as the "Bridge of Light" which has connected and reconciled the light of human
civilizations with one another.
